Torrance Police Department Strictly Enforcing Juvenile Helmet Law

Sergeant Donnie Edmonds T.P.D.

by Jason Kurtenbach

May 28, 2008

California Vehicle Code section 21212(a) states that any person under the age of 18 must wear an approved helmet when operating a

  • bicycle
  • non motorized scooter
  • in line roller skates
  • regular roller skates
  • skateboards

It also applies to passengers on any of the mentioned devises.  This enforcement action is obviously intended to protect the kids and I think many parents are either not aware of the law or choose not to require their children to comply.  School personal are encouraged to keep an eye on kids who are riding their bikes and skateboards to school that don't wear their helmets, to inform them of the law and contact the appropriate authorities.  Thank you for considering this, we hope the notification and education will not only save some kids a ticket but more importantly save their lives.
